I have seen this too often. It is growing out of control, and nothing is being done about it. We are quick to talk about a problem, but slow to solve the same problem. We will say how this should happen and that should happen, but then we are the same people who will offer up every excuse we can think of when we are asked to help. Like the saying goes: If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Actions speak louder than words.
If you look at many of the problems that face our families and our communities they are so substantial in scope and depth that you can have a difficult time trying to find a starting point which of course results in nothing getting started. Many of these problems have evolved over decades, are multi generational and have been exacerbated by external influences that profit from our communities' misfortunes. To further complicate any attempts to fix these problems are the members of our communities that have become so jaded in their thought process or have become so apathetic to these problems that enlisting their support for whatever initiative you attempt to implement becomes either extremely difficult or almost impossible. I have started calling this the "drowning man's economic and social syndrome". They are struggling with their problems and some times when you try to assist them they end up dragging you down, not because they want to but more like a reflexive reaction to outside assistance.
